Before we get into how to change the group captain, let's define the roles of the different member types.
Captain
This is the person whose name is on the group. The person who creates the group is automatically the captain, but that can be changed following the steps below. The captain is a manager too, with a few differences: the captain cannot quit the group, only the captain can re-activate the group if it is made Not Active, and the captain cannot be removed as a manager.
Manager
A manager is a group member who can see the "Managers Only" section in the left sidebar of the group page. As such, a manager can access all the items in that section. The captain is automatically a manager. Managers are able to see any activity that is set up in Test Mode.
There is no limit on how many managers a group can have. If you want all group members to have access to the "Managers Only" section (not recommended, but allowed) simply make everyone a manager.
Member
Any non-manager member of the group. Members cannot see or access the "Managers Only" section and members cannot see activities that are in Test Mode.
How to make someone a Group Manager
Only an existing manager or captain can make someone a manager. In the Group Directory, the last column ("Actions") allows you to make any member a manager. Only Managers will see that last column.
1. Log into groupvalet.com (this can only be done on the website, not in the app).
2. Click the My Groups tab, go to your group and click the Go to Group Homepage button.
3. In the left sidebar, click Directory. Depending on your group's settings it is either in your group's main menu or under "Managers Only".
4. Click Make Manager in the last column for any member who should be a manager. To reverse it, click Remove as Manager. The captain has no button here, because the captain is always a manager.
How to change the Group Captain
1. Log into groupvalet.com (this can only be done on the website, not in the app).
2. Click the My Groups tab, go to your group and click the Go to Group Homepage button.
3. In the left sidebar, under "Managers Only", open "Group" and click Group Settings.
4. The Group Captain field will be a list of all current group members. Select the member that should now be the captain.
5. Important - changing the captain does NOT change the settings for any activities (such as who should receive the Participant List or whose name the notices should be sent from). If you scroll down the form, you'll see a field for each activity in the group, like this

Changing the owner name will update who receives the Participant List.
6. Scroll to the bottom of the Group Settings form and click Update.
For both new Captains or Managers
You should also edit any existing activities and make sure the settings are correct for who the notices are sent from and what name is in the subject line.
